We can dance if we wannoo - A little less than a happy high

We can dance if we wannoo
While waiting for the bus in Davis, I noticed a gaggle of morris dancers milling about in front of J.P. Licks. They were in full regalia, so I can only assume that they were preparing to dance the forbidden dance the safety dance one of the many traditional male fertility dances of the English countryside. Now, I love a good folk tradition with roots lost to history as much as the next guy (ok, perhaps more, but I have "a problem"...), but this one is lost on me. The idea of a group of men with jingley bells strapped to their shins skipping around and waving hankies doesn't exactly conjure images of virility for me.

Still, I'm told that women dig men who dance, so maybe they do carry the Fury of Viking Steel within them.

Ok, maybe not.

And on that note, I'm going to download safety dance instead of going to bed like a good worker bee.

Hitchhiker soon?

We can dance if we want to, we've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it we are never going to lose it
And everything will work out right

Yeah, I'm down with that. Just let me know when.

Ooh, can I convince you to wait till I'm in town? That would be the last weekend in May till the first weekend in June (you can guess why). I've not got any scifi geek friends out here...

Revenge of the Sith will be out by then, and if that isn't enough, I'm sure Drew will let us borrow Turkish Star Wars.

Where else will you see large hairy men beating muppets with their own arms?

Okay, I'm definitely intrigued...

I don't think I can wait any longer than this week, but I'm betting a lot of money I don't have that I'll be happy to go see it again when you get here!!!

Eric coming with? Anyone else?
starflow From: starflow Date: May 10th, 2005 03:00 pm (UTC) (Link)
I've only talked about it with you and Eric, but we should ask around and see if anyone else is interested. We were considering tomorrow. How is that for you?

That'd be great. I can get stuff done tonight.

You're so whipped.

It's because your French heritage gives you different standards of virility.

But yeah, I don't get the Morris dancer thing, either.
komos From: komos Date: May 10th, 2005 11:20 am (UTC) (Link)
...which I'm guessing are equally as silly.

It's just that, well, hankies.
prosicated From: prosicated Date: May 10th, 2005 12:34 pm (UTC) (Link)
Not only hankies, but sticks with bells. The one remotely phallic/virile object is covered in little things that tinkle.
komos From: komos Date: May 10th, 2005 01:40 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, I imagine that one would always want to draw attention to his one thing that is remotely phallic through use of colorful ribbons and tinkley bells.

I know I do.

It's true that they lack the rugged Mediterranean macho of the Greeks.

Empires are built on humble beginnings, it seems.

What? Just the hankies and no sign of the sticks? Sounds like Morris-Lite.

To gain a real appreciation of Morris dancing, try reading Terry Pratchett, specifically Lords and Ladies

Extracts from the book follow:

Lords and Ladies (1992)
The Elves are using the stone circle known as "The Dancers" to enter the Diskworld and wreak havok, but they hadn't counted on the Lancre Morris Men and the "Other Dance"

**********
The door to the smithy had been bolted shut. Within were the eight members of the Lancre Morris Men, six times winners of the Fifteen Mountains All-Comers Morris Championship (Three times outright, once after 11 hours extra time, and twice when the other finalists ran away)
***************
"Shut up" said Jason. "and put your bells on. Carter?"  "They're waiting for us!"  "I'll say this just once," said Jason, "After tonight no one's ever to talk about the Stick and Bucket dance ever again. All right?"
*************
"The accordian's melting, Jason" sobbed Carter.
"...one,two, forward...bean setting!"
The accordion wheezed. The Elves pressed in. Out of the corner of his eye Jason saw a dozen grinning, fascinated faces.
"Jason!"
"...one,two... Carter into the middle...one,two,spin..."
Seven pairs of boots thudded down..."
"Jason!"
"one,two...spin...ready...one,two...back...back...one,two...turn...KILL...and back, one two..."
************
"What was that dance your Jason and his men did when they'd got drunk?" said Granny.
"It's the Lancre Stick and Bucket Dance, Esme"
"It's legal, is it?"
"technically they shouldn't do it when there's women present" said Nanny. "otherwise it's sexual morrisment."

I know! Even the video for The Safety Dance has Morrises (Morrisers?) dancing with steel. I can run with the pastels and goofy hats when paired with sticks and rocks swords, but hankies? Do nothing for me.

*looks at picture*

You know, it's really the hats that make the outfits so completely representative of...whatever the antitheses of 'virility' is.
komos From: komos Date: May 10th, 2005 11:30 am (UTC) (Link)
But the hats are so jaunty!

It's times like this I wish I had kept that link to the Morriss Dancer performance overdubbed with the hard-core rpa soundtrack (that somehow fitted)

I was thinking ska, myself. Either way, it'd be fantastic. ^_^

I'm sensing a project coming on. Would you want to do video or a kind of photo-collage?
From: corvus_coronis Date: May 11th, 2005 01:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think this one was a video - probably would have better impact.
