Gremlins - A little less than a happy high

Gremlins
Here is a list of things that have mysteriously shit the bed (ah, colorful euphemisms...) this week:

a) Cordless Phone - The battery is no longer accepting a charge, so it looks like I may end up seeking out a cell sooner than later. Once that's accomplished, I'll need to decide what to do with the land line and my connection to the internets.

b) DVD Player - I guess I can't complain too much since it was free, except that it was working fine on Thursday, and when I came home last night, I found that it refuses to read disks. I know that Joe abandoned it to watch Heat in his room on his spanky new laptop last night, so I'm guessing that something catastrophic happened to the player on his watch. I'm less than happy over this.

c) CD-ROM/DVD Drive - I'd be less inclined to rage over the loss of the free DVD player if it weren't for the fact that this device failed, too. Curiously, it's suffering the same problem as its cousin - it simply refuses to read disks. I needed a burner anyway.

d) PC's Internal Memory - This one's my own damned fault. I've got two different sticks on the board, and this week, I started getting memory parity errors. Unfortunately, it's not really worth picking up a matching pair since it's an older machine and the price of legitimately compatible memory is something in the magnitude of a quarter of an upgrade to a machine that's three times as fast and comes standard with twice as much memory as I'd be buying. Scavenging, it seems, has reached its limits.

On the up side, I found these, and am now in the process of deciding whether Zoe needs either a "My Ribbon Is Better Than Your Ribbon" or an "I Support More Troops Than You" magnet.

I love those ribbons. LOVE LOVE LOVE. If we still had a car, I'd have one of the custom ones made that says, 'I support whatever's trendy'. :)

The cool thing? The company donates its proceeds to Operation Uplink, which provides free prepaid calling cards to troops overseas. "I Support More Troops Than You Do" is accurate.

In that case, you should get that ribbon...

The other one has a cooler color scheme.

Oi. Sorry to hear about all the mess. Does this mean you are phone-less?

Oh, and I vote for "My Ribbon Is Better Than Your Ribbon"

Pretty much. All of the other handsets died along the way as well, so I'm down to replacing the battery, replacing the phone, or making calls at the few relic payphones that are left.

Maybe I should look into firing up IM again.

Everyone here at Entropy House is using those, as are my parents.

Got advice on a cell? I'm still hedging.

I'm still all about the Treo650... :) But... go exploring! Hit the mall, get a smoothie, and let the cellphone people suck up to you!!

That's a huge step, and I'm not sure I'm that liquid.

Does the Treo run something compatible with Quicken?

PocketQuicken :)

But if I go with the Treo, I may not be able to have a phone with my next paycheck... which was the going idea.

Yeah, that could be an issue. :/ The Treo is fun, but definately pricey because you're paying for the Palm as well as the phone.

My spider-sense is tingling.

Both DVD and CD-ROM drives failing at the same time? No, I don't buy simultaneous hardware failure unless Joe was playing fu-fme [NSFW] with your computer.

There's no real easy way to diagnose this, however, as I've never heard of software conflicts causing CD drives to fail.

Given that his cd player has been having trouble reading disks for about a year, I think it may have something to do with the way that he treats the machinery. From what I understand, the trays don't respond particularly well to being pushed closed, though I've no idea how/why that would effect the ability of the device to read.
