Stuff and things. - A little less than a happy high

Stuff and things.
I'm mulling rules for an amateurish home version of Iron Chef. So far I've got a simple idea and a less simple idea that kind of go like this:

Simple: A person acting as the chairman decides on the secret ingredient and venue, both of which are announced on Sunday. Participants respond with what they'd like to bring, and their ideas are approved on a first-come, first-served basis. This serves not only to ensure that not everyone brings custard (for example), but also gives the chairman some flexibility in crafting a menu from the suggested dishes. The tasting happens sometime during the next weekend, and dishes are scored on the standard scale. The overall winner becomes the next chairman.

More complicated: Same as above, but with a handful of people - no more than 4 or 5 - named as Iron Chef (Whatever)s. Here, people can not only gun for the chairman slot, but can attempt to unseat one of the current Iron Chefs by calling them out.

Yeah, I know, it's not terribly original, but we're not doing it and I think it could be fun. Now I need input!

If you're interested, last week I posted three pics to 7shots here, here, and here. The first was part of the Gloucester photo-set. The others are new-ish.

definitely interested.

The only issue I have with homebrewed Iron Chef's is that not everyone gets a kitchen, and you have to bring stuff that's going to get cold quickly. It's an issue that I haven't figured out how to resolve yet, short of buying expensive thermally insulated baking dishes and whatnot.

...else be creative enough with prep that something can be tossed into or onto stove that it only takes minimal heating to get it going.

It's less than ideal, but we don't have access to kitchen stadium... or even a professional-grade kitchen. Improvisation is the rule here.

yeah.
we did one recently for a friend's birthday.
Ended up taking a salad and a bread/butter combo.
(chocolate themed.)

I'm definitely up for it, but like you said it needs a mediator to arrange dishes.

I think chairman will be an oddly challenging job.

Yay!

I think I like the first option to start with, simply because I imagine this garnering a whole lot of interest, and I bet a bunch of people will want to show off their Mad Cookery Skillz. But we could try to make a monthly event, and switch up the rules every other month or so. I love cookin' for people!

Would we have people sign up to cook, and then other people sign up to judge? And maybe rotate the cooks and judges every month?

In any case, I'm totally in, and totally willing to help you plan on getting this baby in motion!

I was so looking forward to naming Iron Chef Pan Asian Cuisine though...

I guess we could start with a 8-10 entrant limit, especially since even that would be a lot of food for a tasting. I had thought that we would do a "judged by your peers" sort of thing, but I like the idea of having free-standing judges. Now it's just a matter of figuring out who gets to be cook-y and who gets to play minor celebrity.

...and who gets to be the first chair.

i would gladly take on the role of minor celebrity in the form of a young, flakey lady; i totally have the wardrobe for it. and i can eat.

This is a totally cool idea. There are two awesome cooks here, waiting to show off those skillz.

Name your time and place, and we BOTH would compete. Or judge. As long as there is eating involved!

(Actually, I would LOVE to be the chairman...I can think of some interesting stuff to use as the secret ingredient!)
