Iron Chef: Planning (the second)
Based on yesterday's poll, our current lineup appears to look like this:

Chefs: Alex, Noah, Ry, Jeff, Pete & Ray
Judges: Margaret, Eric, Justin & Mike

This is dependent upon a number of factors, the most important is likely timing. Most folks cooking seem to agree on March 9, so I'm going to tentatively go with that for now.

If there are absolute problems with that date, please let me know. Additionally, if you are cooking or judging, please speak up now if there are things that you either prefer not to work with or prefer not to eat. Better that the chefs know of nut allergies or dislikes of spicy foods early so they're not disadvantaged or inadvertently trying to kill you.

If someone else wants to chefferate I'll step aside so Meg can judge un-biased, just lemme know.

Sounds good. Are you planning on posting the rules of engagement and such, for those of us who haven't competed before?

Rules are posted here. Once I've gotten firm commitments from everyone, a thousand trained truffle pigs will sniff out an appropriate theme and hopefully will let me know early enough that I can give participants two weeks notice. So far, themes have included pears, leeks, chili, and beef. It is unlikely that we will repeat, at least not before there are a few more competitions down.

So you go for themes rather than a particular ingredient that must be used?

It's been primarily ingredient based, though there was one departure (chili) and another that fell by the wayside.

the "theme" can be confusing, as it connotes a kind of preparation as opposed to a secret ingredient.

There have been occasional broad themes on both the original Iron Chef (Tokyo X, Girl's Festival) and Iron Chef America (Thanksgiving, Farmer's Market, Breakfast). Chili wasn't that much of a stretch compared to "Breakfast," and I think the lost theme would have been great fun for everyone involved. That said, though they will be less common than ingredients, I won't say that I'll never go the theme route again.

For the sake of accord, y'all can assume that we'll be working with an ingredient this go.

allergy

I think I should be able to make that date. I was hoping for one of the spring break weekends, but this should be okay. Coming from CT will be a little tricky, but I'll try to make it work. As for your call about things people'd prefer not to work with, I'd like to keep scallops off of the menu, or actually just not the main ingredient. If they're the main ingredient it will result in me either not tasting my dish at all as I prepare it, or treating the judges to a display of projectile vomiting while they eat (ooh, can I get bonus points for presentation for that?).

We tend to start plating in the early afternoon, so it should leave you time to get back once the dust has settled. Also, I'm pretty sure that V's offer for kitchen use still stands rather than having to finagle CT to MA transport.

Scallops are right out.
