Iron Chef: Announcement
I'm so glad to see new faces and new ideas brought into our friendly competition, and I'm reminded that we may be at a crossroads. The themes thus far have challenged and inspired our chefs, but I'm also aware that at least one - chili - was a world of pain that created grumblings which persist even a year later. I have heard you, and lest you start to think that we're going wrong, I have decided upon a theme that should be familiar to most anyone's kitchen. This event will feature an ingredient that can be served by the spoonful or incorporated into a strange brew of your making.

I've already given it away, but just so we're clear, our theme for March will be:

As always, the general rules are posted here. Specific to this competition, I will say that cream in any of its forms should be acceptable. Just to spice things up a bit, keep in mind that at least one judge has voiced a preference for savory over sweet.

Use any form you can think of, but be prepared to defend your choice to the judges.

Aw man, I was hoping for Eric Clapton.

Are you still collecting and approving items beforehand, or are we free to create as we see fit? Also, are we limited to only one dish or can we bring multiple dishes?

I'd like to, just to be sure we don't have six entries of ice cream. And yes, it's a tasting portion of one dish to express your take on the theme.

So anything downstream of Pasteurized Cream in this chart should be alright? Obviously doing any of the derivation steps yourself is to be preferred where possible.

I think you'll have a harder time justifying butter in its various states than sour cream or mascarpone. Not that homemade butter wouldn't be appreciated, but you'd really have to work to sell it to the chefs if there was no other cream component there.

While cream contains butterfat it is the solution cream forms that makes it special. Things like mascarpone make the cut because they still embody the things that make cream special (or are formed by those properties). Butter has been modified from its original form too far to be acceptable as the component, at least as I see it.

I would stay in the "Cream products" section of that chart, and avoid the "Butter products"

Hmmmm.

I'm partial to all sorts of x-TREME foods, like Gogurt and Lunchables, so I'll start handing out double points for the use of Kream.

One of the cooks can't do scallops, and one of the judges has expressed a preference for savory over sweet. Aside from, no one has said anything about allergies or the like.
