Sometimes I look at activities calendars from nursing homes and wonder if the whole activities concept will need to be rethought when my generation enters its endgame. I suppose it will depend on whether aging (or more depressing - dementia) increases our appreciation for kitsch and reduces our native cynicism, but I've seen no real evidence so far to support this. In any case, I think I'd become vaguely suicidal if the best I had to look forward to in the coming month was once-a-week Pokeno, a "Water Balloon Toss," and "Pictures with Mr. Turkey."

I got into a long conversation with one of our assistant directors about this yesterday evening. Activities are supposed to be tailored to individuals, but all too often group activities like sing-alongs and bingo just get scheduled. One facility went so far as to list nail care, as in standard personal care, as an activity.

We'll visit!

I think you underestimate Mr. Turkey.

And when Ester's arthritis isn't acting up, she can toss a mean water balloon.

When I hit the 70-80 range, I'm taking up smoking and heroin. Why? Cause fuck those people!

Reminds me of the Dennis Leary joke about smoking: "Smoking takes ten years off your life. Well, it's the worst ten years, isn't it?"

I suspect we'll all get WiiPSXBox 360's because we won't be able to move anything but our fingers.

I'm hoping we'll be hard-wired at that point just to allay the possibility of not having the dexterity to handle the controls.

Hell, I don't have the dexterity to handle the controls now.

You're going to spend your dementia years tending your chickens and making pickles.
Even if "tending chickens" means sneaking into the cafeteria kitchens and "feeding" over boiled chicken breasts some flavor and "making pickles" means putting salt on the salad.

I hope that my 'retirement community' offers D & D, Euchre, Buffy viewing and gobs of old movies. I will be content.

I have no idea how to play Euchre, but I think I'd be happy there.

Sing-a-long

The sing alongs at my mom's asst living place are horrendous. Who wants to listen to ancient show tunes and tunes to the level of Take Me Out To The Ballgame.

When I'm 80, I want Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Nirvana. All us blue-hairs will be head shaking and yelling our asses off. =)

Re: Sing-a-long

Have you seen Young @ Heart? It's about a senior chorus that does pretty much that, only with Sonic Youth, the Ramones, and the Clash.
