Bowing to the Age of Heroes
Could one of you recommend a good and reasonably accessible translation of Homer's Odyssey? I was considering that of Richmond Lattimore, but thought I'd check to see if you could think of something better.

In case it helps, it's being gifted to a fourteen year-old.

Current Mood: Homeric

stanely lombardo's is the most recent and so probably the most accessible to kids. people say it's good, but i haven't read it yet.

I completely agree. Very, very readable.

yes. Go for the Lombardo.

I've heard him read from both his Iliad and Odyssey. He's the NICEST and most humble of men.

I'm a big fan.

Are you billing it as the prequel to that new Brad Pitt movie?

Sequel! I meant sequel!

I figured...

Aw hell, I hadn't even thought of that.

[*shrugs*]

I think I can live with being accused of playing pop trends. Maybe. My bigger concern is whether he'll actually pick it up and read it.

I hope the fourteen year old in question knows the difference between Homer and Homer Simpson. :)

I would hope so, but I'm not making any assumptions. 'Course, if he doens't, he'll never be able to watch The Simpsons the same way again.

The Lattimore is painful. Me, I'd recommend the Robert Fagles.

'least, it's the one every educator at every level of education in the city of toronto recommends. Me, I bought into the recommendation and regret nothing. :)

It's been a while since I picked it up, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that my memory's a little flawed.

I appreciate the dissenting opinion, too. I'll page through the two and see which I like best. Thanks. ^_^
