Oh baby, just you shut your mouth
Sometimes when I hear Mandarin, it sounds like the speaker is sharing some sort of intimate secret.

bleh

then I must have heard Cantonese in my dream last nights.

no secrets seemed to be spilled in my fevered sleep...

I'm more familiar with Cantonese (or at least with how it sounds) from my daliances in Boston's Chinatown. It just doesn't seem to have the same 'smooth operator' feel of Mandarin. I'm more inclined to associate the sound with a street festival than with pillow-talk.

Must have been a hell of a dream.

That's why I like speaking Korean.

Love that.

I have to ask... how did you come to learn it?

Namja chingu ga hangook saram eeae yo. Na eemonim kae so mal hae yo.

I was dating a Korean boy. I wanted to know what his aunts were saying about me. I pick up languages pretty quickly.

I wish I had that kind of facility with language. Seems I'm very good at differentiating sounds, but actually learning the language?

I'm still disappointed that I lost my first language and have never really been able to regain fluency... I really should just move to Quebec and do the immersion thing.

College Roommate lore

Random memory follows.

Freshman year of college, I was in a 4-person suite. Kevin was from Hong Kong, and thus spoke Cantonese (as well as being English-fluent), as did a number of his close friends at school. Mike (roommate #2) often amused himself by sitting in the living room while Kevin was on the phone with, say, Stan and "translating":

"Hi, Stan. What? Oh, you got the goats for this week's orgy? Good, good. No, don't forget the floor wax."

It's a darn good thing Kevin had a really good sense of humor and was also amused by this; as it was, he'd frequently end up laughing so hard he'd have trouble finishing the conversation. I'm not sure if Stan was even informed why...

I'm still very fond of the kanji tattoos that say things like "Stupid white boy who doesn't know what this says."
