A little less than a happy high
Gravity Rides a Minivan
A short while ago, I was mucking about the kitchen trying to choose a delicious cheeseTM to go along with dinner. As I am wont to do when alone in the house, I was singing to myself. In this particular case, I was singing Modest Mouse's "Gravity Rides Everything," so you can imagine my surprise when I heard the opening bars to that very song issuing from the TV set.

In my amazement, I rushed to the living room, my mind awash with the possible vehicles that could have been using the song. Someone made a deal to get the band just a little bit more exposure by selling the rights to their music. I had to know.

Vehicle indeed. It was an ad for the Nissan Quest. They're using it to sell a frickin' minivan.

Current Music: Reel Big Fish, "Sell Out"

Hee. Yes, the day I first saw that commercial I had a jaw-drop "no it can't be, but it is" reaction. Though your tapping into the Modest Mouse psyche is pretty neat. Did you know they have a new album coming out?

You know, I have nothing against them making money and getting out to a wider audience, but c'mon... it's a minivan for pete's sake.

I didn't actually. Is the current buzz promising, or is it still too early in the process?

This is all I've really heard: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/04-01/06.shtml

I wouldn't worry too much about them selling out. Hopefully they just sold that song for some extra cash to buy more gear. One could hope :-)

Have you heard any of his side project Ugly Cassanova? I like it. Though many people think it's really strange.

I'm pretty sure Isaac Brock's musical integrity is intact. Worry not!

Cool. Thanks for the link.

Honestly, I'm not convinced that they've been coopted*, but I did need to express the "Whu..?" reaction I had. It's likely that the band had nothing at all to do with the decision. Still, a minivan...

*Side note: "Sell Out" was written as an answer to all of the kids who hold that any band that actually makes money has been hopelessly compromised.

It was a minivan so it would be ironic :-)
