She has the most beautiful expression on her face. Che buona!

Did you like Frida, from a cinematographic standpoint?

I was very pleased when I found that photo. Something very special was captured.

I can say that I really liked the film on a number of levels, but I'm horrid with questions like this. I think it's mostly because I feel like I don't know that I know enough about the art to comment. What I can say is that it took some doing to recognize the passage of time within the film in spite of its span of a couple of decades. With the exception of “Mexico City – 1922” and then the collage representing the journey to New York, most of the temporal cues were subtle enough that it was almost jarring when Diego came into a scene with grey hair. On some level I can look at this as though her life was being portrayed as a continuum, and that the choices made allow the viewer to be more present in that life. Then again, it may be that this is reading too much into it.

I really liked how Taymor was able to blend art and reality in a very organic way. There is a way in which the process of finding art is communicated, and given where my mind has been at lately, this was deeply appreciated. I kept being surprised by the way that the images were brought to life. I seem to recall reading an interview where Taymor claimed that because Kahlo’s work was very autobiographical that this transformation came naturally to the film. Regardless, it was beautiful to watch.

You know, now that I’m thinking about it, watching the film almost felt like viewing a series of powerful paintings in a gallery. Every once in a while, you will stop to read one of the wall plaques, but for the most part you’re just swept up by what the images convey.

You know, I watched the extra features last night and Taymor spoke about some of the very same things. I think I'm a little embarassed at being so redundant.
