A little less than a happy high
Vivian, it's happening again
I've a plan to wipe my HD, reformat it, and install XP. Should anyone have any advice to offer before this happens, I would greatly appreciate it.

Back everything up... burn it to CD or put it on a zip drive. There's a surprising number of files that you just don't think of that you may want.

Such things as bookmarks are usually forgotten.

depends on what's happening again...

I'm guessing that this is just a regularly scheduled upgrade... if so, you've got the right plan. I'd include Norton SystemWorks and Ad-Aware, among the new installs, to keep it running reasonably.

If things are just behaving oddly, then... Ad-Aware to start. SystemWorks to follow. Still maybe a rebuild, as planned...

If you don't require XP or other really-recent Windows-based software, then you might be well served by dropping a few hundred on a refurb or used iMac, and adding VirtualPC for the Window-ish needs -- much faster to restore a clean HD image from CD, than to rebuild your whole PC....
