A little less than a happy high

BAH! I say
So as it turns out I need a permit to take photos in the subway. I learned this last night when one of the T Gnomes stood directly in front of me and said, "You know you can't take pictures down here without permission, right?"

The Man is always stickin' it to me.

So, come Tuesday, I'll trek down to their business offices and dutifully sign up for my one month indulgence like a good citizen.

Current Music: The Clash, "The Guns of Brixton"

That's crazy!

They won't do anything about the urine stench, but god forbid you take a picture?

The T gnomes work in very mysterious ways. Remember, these are the same folk who boosted their fares by 25% in spite of declining ridership and cutbacks in service.

The protection of privacy in public places is such a pain ... I /hate/ being included in snapshots people take of their friends.

Re:

Good grief!
So security cameras wouldn't be allowed ... they might capture an assault; that might be taken as portraying the MBTA in a negative light.
What a strangely frank bit of prose that is!

I thought much the same thing when I first read it.

The subway here is just called the T. T gnomes are the various sort who make it work. Some are very helpful. Some are capricious.

Some are downright malicious.

Listening to an archived <a href=""http://www.archive.org/download/LaurieAndersonOTG/LaurieAndersonR1.mp3">2 hour interview with Laurie Anderson</a> (MP3) ... wooooooo!

Very cool. I remember the first time I went to see her quite vividly. The audience was a strange mix of aging hipster gallery types and tragic youth with an eye for the absurd. It made me happy.

You saw here? as in, live? real-time? actual? meat-space?

Oooh ... ("Superman" came into my mind's ear just now ... no shiet)
You know, female artists have kept me alive ... Melanie, Joanie Mitchel, Joan Baez, Ferron, Heather Bishop, Kate Bush ...

Problems with your CSS? or my Mozilla?
"female artists" above is a link, but I can't see it (it shows up with mouseover, at least)

From here, links are very slightly offset with a blue as opposed to a black font.

hunh ...

I remember way back in the good old days discovering that browsers render a given colour code differently if it's in a GIF than if it's explicit (in background color).

*sigh* ... black-magic and voodoo.

Live at the Wang Center in Boston. I think it was February, 1988. I had been introduced to Anderson's work by a good friend of mine and became something of a fanatic.

She also pointed me at Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, so you can probably follow the asthetic of some of my early influences.

Follow it in deed!!
Gabriel leaves me in awe ... the soundtrack to Last Temptation ... amazing. (I once had plans to take it on the road, a live performance ... many hand drums with the appropriate mix of instruments; I think it would have worked even w/o the traditional instruments.)

In 1996 I took a picture of the Alewife-bound red-line platform at Park Street Station which was swarming with a couple hundred goths. I wonder if that would bother the gnomes.

I don't know that it's something they can realistically enforce, but the policy may give them legal recourse if you start publishing what they deem "objectionable" photos.
