If abandoning ship at your current job for a higher-paying one isn't an option:

I second the bartending idea- there's got to be good money in that, plus it's a job where your friends can visit you (and we promise we wouldn't try to sucker free beer out of it).

Doesn't your roommate owe you a mad wad of cash?

Hmmm... you're a fabulous cook- maybe you could start to make some profit with the fruits of your labor somehow?

I'd welcome a money-making brainstorm session sometime, as I am also wading in the stinky pit of fiscal despair.

I've a feeling that hitting my roommate up for the cash he owes me is going to be futile. He'll get dodgy and say he can't do it, at which point, I'll be really tempted to tell him to get out. While on some level that may be a healthy choice, I'm loathe to be fully saddled with another $4k. I don't know... I might do it anyway since I'm in a self-destructive snit.

The only thing I can think of would be cheese, but that takes time, and I've never done it before. I've a feeling that it would take a while to become proficient enough to start experimenting with producing a fine cheese, which is where the market would be. Soda's an outside possibility, but it would require a venue and a customer base who could look past the yeast sediment.

I'd be happy to join you in that, though medical testing might rank up there with selling organs.
