It's a single glaze over white stoneware. The glaze "breaks" over ridges and other texture in the piece, which gives the dark, reddish-orange color you're seeing.

It's actually smallish. It started as a larger bowl, but something went terribly wrong in the final stages of throwing. What's left is about the size of my hand.

The big ones DO get all the glory.

Lordy.

I tend to throw haphazardly. My instructor thinks it's a little weird that I don't have a clear sense of what I'm trying to throw when I sit down outside of "big piece" or "little piece." Things just seem to suggest themselves as I center and open.

I chant every time I play with mud. I'm assuming that eventually I'll need to become more rigid. For now, though, freeform throwing seems to be the best way to go about getting a feel for the material.
