Innocence - A little less than a happy high

Innocence
Can I convince any of you to join me at the Brattle theater to see GITS: Innocence tonight? I'd really like to see it, and I could use the company.

Ghost In The Shell: Innocence at 5:30, 9:30
(2004) dir Mamoru Oshii [99 min]

Almost ten years later, director Oshii returns to the world he helped to create with the first GHOST IN THE SHELL. Three years after the events in the first film, INNOCENCE reunites us with the operatives of Section 9, particularly the stone-faced Batou, a future detective with a troubled past and a slobbery pet basset hound. Batou is investigating the death of a ‘gynoid,’ an android created as a living sex-doll, and, inevitably, the case unearths some unpleasant secrets. A future-noir very much in the vein of Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner, INNOCENCE is an eye-popping, complex, and cinematic anime not to be missed on the big screen.

Incidentally, GITS is playing at 7:30 if you totally want to geek out.

Tomorrow's feature is Grave of Fireflies.

Ooooh.

I've got plans tomorrow, but Grave is a beautiful, moving, tragic, depressing, amazing piece of work. I found it really, really gut-wrenching - just a forewarning if you're looking for a feel-good piece - but it's possibly one of the most human looks at the tragedy and awfulness of war in general, and the tail end of WWII in particular, I've ever seen.

I'm not sure I'm going to make tonight's either.

I am fast approaching lame.

We saw it in Times Square the way movies were meant to be seen.

You're gonna love it. If only the Brattle had a decent sound system...

Oh. BTW, if you ever come over, we've got GITS: Innocence on DVD.

I can't believe I haven't seen it before now. I feel so... deficient.

We should work on that. That and getting you into the Hat of Authority. I'm ready to do a Belgian. Heck, I might even be convinced to try an all-grain formulation.

Is it a recent release?

Yep... just last year, I think.

Then I'll be keeping a watch out on SBS for it, depending how quickly it makes it's way over to here.

Me too. Lacking company, I ended up passing last night.

Sadly, you're on the wrong coast for a play date.

Too bad I'm here... Although I wasn't terrifically thrilled by the first one, I really do want to see this one based on the previews I saw for it.

GITS was fantastic work, but I guess it's not for everyone.

I dunno. Maybe it was just 'cuz I was sick and worried about interviews. Like I said, the previews of the sequel definitely piqued my interest in it.
