Soccer Hooligan

Here's my contribution to the "Vague lj post" meme

In 1923, the Ku Klux Klan made their first daylight march in the US in Milo, Maine. Now, you might think that Maine is not exactly known for its large black population, and you would be absolutely right. In Maine, the Klan was far more concerned with the French Canadian Catholics who had come to the state to seek work in the mills. There was... let's call it concern on the part of the Protestant employers that the Frenchies would organize, and so resorted to fear and ridicule as a means of maintaining the social order. At its high point, the Klan in Maine boasted nearly 8% of the state's population as active members.

I certainly can't claim to have experienced the depth of prejudice that my grandparents did. Still, it was a little too readily that I got reminded that I was from the French-Canadian part of town, and a little too easily that jokes were told invoking base stupidity and lack of social graces as given traits of Franco-Americans. French was my first language, and that was lost because I was teased first for not being able to speak English and then because I had an accent.

The jokes just tell themselves.

At any rate, I'm probably being prickly here, but you know, I'm rather filled with the urge to say something along the lines of "Fuck off you bigoted white-bread asstard."

Oh, wait... I guess that's not so vague.
