News from Effingham

I have a HD (D:) that needs an XP installation. I also have an XP install disk. What I don't appear to have is a bootable XP disk, and I haven't been able to find a way around the setup program's insistence on attempting to repair the installation of XP on C: rather than on D: where I need it. I don't know if I'm attempting to do something without the proper tools, or if I actually have the proper tools but am just being too dumb to use them.

To make matters worse, I seem to have picked up a piece of spyware that changes my browser's startup page to some lame-ass search page... which then informs me that I have been infected by spyware, suggesting several pay-for products to eliminate it. Uh, thanks for fucking with my machine and then telling me you can fix the problem for a mere $39.95. Bastardos.

I'm also ending up with skipping from most cds I attempt to play, and from every song I attempt to rip. Effin' yay.

I've lost faith in my ability to deal with any of this. Can you point me in a direction?
