I've always liked the GTI, it's practically the definition of QUICK. I also liked the fact that VW outright refused to put an automatic transmission in the top-line trim for several years.

What's weird is that the majority of the cars I was able to look at on Friday were automatics. It hurt my head a lot, but I guess that sticks are not very popular amongst leased cars... which defines the range I'm looking at.

I spooked myself a little bit the first time the turbo kicked it. It was frickin' sweet.

MY GOD! With such a chariot, you could drive all the way to southern CONNECTICUT! Perhaps, even FURTHER!

Before I Move Back East...

We oughtta figure out a way for us all to meet. Maybe komos could fly into Chicago and I could drive up to meet him there, and then we could all spend some time together?

Re: Before I Move Back East...

From Chicago, you could GTI caravan to Philly. My '03 just got an oil change today and is ready to party!

Along the way, we could do synchronous maneuvers down the highway to music that's Currently In FashionTM with the young people of America.

I believe, sir, that if you haven't yet, you need to get yourself to Ithaca's summer Festival parade just to see the Volvo Ballet, which is every bit as wonderful and wacky as it sounds.

Re: Before I Move Back East...

Wouldn't a GTI be like a hard-drinking cousin that no one talks about crashing the party?

This does have intriguing possibilities. ^_^

Wait... how long were you guys without a ride? ;P

Seriously, though, I'd totally be up for a visit. Say the word and we can start planning something.

We're in the midst of renovations at the moment, but in June, things should have settled by then. Just let us know!

Excellent. I'll bring the makings of a cheese plate with.

Your Jetta is a GLS, right? What do you think of it?

Me likey.
I was lusting after the 1.8T VWs before I decided to go carless/zipcar.

Other cars you may want to consider in that price range or cheaper:
Mazda3 (which I really like a lot)
Civic si (cheaper, but I don't like it as much personally)
and... uh... Scions. I really like Scions. And there's a bolt-on turbocharger now, total cost cheaper than a 1.8t.

The GTI is a lot more nimble than the Jetta GLS. I think they're carrying the same engine, which means that the Jetta's extra weight is making it eminently more sensible. Right now, I'm just waiting for insurance quotes so I can make a decision.
