Into the woods
Pete and I have been talking about camp-paddle-return (probably a night and a day long) canoe trip down the Saco River sometime before the end of the month. I know that some of you are dead-set against The Great Outdoors unless there's good plumbing, but surely we can coax couple of takers for the trip, right? Just let me know if you might be interested. Once I hear, we can plan.

I'm interested. I have no fear of the outdoors. But I lack equipment and sleeping things.

I have two backpacking tents which are smallish but keep the bugs out. I can also probably lend you a mummy bag if it comes to it. I think we'll probably rent the canoes unless we suddenly know lots of people who have them.

I, too, am interested but lacking in supplies; also, September would be better for me than August.

Let me check when the rental place closes shop for the season. I imagine it's later than September, but I want to make sure.

I would also need to know how much it would be to rent canoes. I'm saving for various things.

Canoes are around $38 for the day, so roughly $19 per person plus campsite.

I'd have to wear clothes, right?

Were you planning to go feral on us?
canonfire From: canonfire Date: August 11th, 2005 08:08 pm (UTC) (Link)

Oh babeee.

better feral than sterile, right?

Re: Oh babeee.

True dat.

Incidentally, the "Rules of the River" say nothing about public nudity, so...

Cape Cod, eh? Tell that to the denizens of P-Town!

Re: Oh babeee.

Got something for Maine? 'cause that's where we're headed...

Re: Oh babeee.

You're in the clear. You're not in film or theatre. But clayrobeson may be in trouble with the improv...

Maine

1.A. "In a public place... (2) The actor knowingly exposes the actor's genitals under circumstances which, in fact, are likely to cause affront or alarm;

6 Mos, $500

Oooh! I wanna go!

You gonna be around?
wisdom_seeker From: wisdom_seeker Date: August 11th, 2005 08:24 pm (UTC) (Link)
Late August I certainly could be. My internship doesn't start till September 6th, and my pre-employment physical is scheduled for Thursday, August 18th. Other than that, my schedule till the 6th is pretty much wide open!

But, as Burke discovered, you'll have to wear clothes...

Tell of the insanity?

More pressing, do you have gear?
bushidokelt From: bushidokelt Date: August 13th, 2005 12:09 am (UTC) (Link)
Hmm.

I can get two tents. I have two backbacks. We need a white gas stove...We need a dutch oven....hmm...we need beer and a water purifier.
I'll shell out for the water purifier and teh gast stove....
We then need to plan a menu.
komos From: komos Date: August 13th, 2005 11:28 am (UTC) (Link)
a) How big are the tents? Are we talking two more two mans?

b) Won't need them. The campsite is right on the river, which means anything we paddle with will go directly from car to canoe. I'm far more concerned about sleeping bags/pads.

c) I'm not sure we need a gas stove and dutch oven. We have a grill, and we need a cooler or two.

d) Water is available at the campsite.

e) Yes, as soon as we firm up plans, we'll figure out who can and can't eat what.

Not yet. I'll probably talk with Pete tomorrow so we can figure out what's what.

As for gear, I've got a sleeping bag, but not much else. (I've got a day-pack, but it's not built for having a sleeping bag lashed to it.)
komos From: komos Date: August 13th, 2005 11:29 am (UTC) (Link)
What's with the packs? Won't need it. Sleeping bag is fine.
wisdom_seeker From: wisdom_seeker Date: August 13th, 2005 04:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
I didn't see your reply to Pete before I left my comment, so I didn't realize packs would be unnecessary...
komos From: komos Date: August 13th, 2005 08:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
Not a problem... I'm just wondering why folks are thinking that we need them.
wisdom_seeker From: wisdom_seeker Date: August 13th, 2005 11:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
I dunno about others, but when I think "camping," I automatically get a picture of a hiker in my mind, even though you stated "canoeing."
wisdom_seeker From: wisdom_seeker Date: August 22nd, 2005 02:15 pm (UTC) (Link)

The month, she is approaching her end...

I was told, much to my chagrin, that I have to go back to the V.A. on Wednesday and Friday of this week (to have a *second* pre-employment TB test, on top of the one I already passed and the chest x-ray), which means the soonest I can get to Boston will be Friday night (probably after 10). How (if at all) would this affect my being able to join you for camping?
