sorry to hear about your machine. i've only had my current machine 2 years and i'm already starting to dread replacing it, though i don't think i could function without one that works properly. my S-I-L had a similar experience with a compaq that turned out to be non-upgradable. so what did she do? went out and bought an hp. i'm sure that solution worked (considering hp owns compaq). still, a new machine beats monkeying around inside an old one - i found that out the hard way.

anyway, you mentioned needing certain agility - i assume this means stuff like being able to run photoshop without waiting an hour for a photo to render, but what else do you use it for? i know of some less mainstream companies that specialize in PCs for music and video production and the like, but if you're a pretty basic home user, then places like gateway or dell probably wouldn't do you wrong.

It's primarily image manipulation (and the occasional gaming.) Not sure I'd need something for hard-core video production unless Pete's crazy idea actually gets off the ground.

I actually like tinkering with my machines' innards, but between planned obsolescence and the fact that I'm not really able to afford the latest gear to throw in a system, there are some seriously diminishing returns. It's the usable v. capable question again.
