Oregon or bust?
BeerSummit is sponsoring their first annual event on the left coast in Eugene, Oregon at the end of May. When Josh mentioned it at the volunteer meeting last Sunday, I got this crazy idea that I should make the trip.

Yeah, I know you’re thinking that ‘the beer thing’ is now approaching obsession level, but I’ve got my head on straight about this. It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a real vacation, and even longer since I’ve done any significant travelling. I’m in desperate need of an adventure, and the event presents itself as a convenient jumping-off point. I know at the very least that I will be able to go and have a least one thing where I will connect with people on a real and positive level. It would make a great start to the week, and would do a lot to make me feel at home.

Like many others, I answered the siren call of www.findyourspot.com. Based on my choices (including very deliberately not selecting a preferred section of the country), Portland, Oregon came up as my top city. Honestly, I don’t know that I’m in a position to suddenly up and relocate to the other side of the country, but the result did help feed the fantasy about this trip. I could go to get a feel for the place, maybe get a better idea of what having a city matched to me really means. I want to go and explore, and that feeling hasn’t been with me for some time. I’m not sure I have the funds to make the trip, but I feel a little like I might need it.

I was talking to Pablo a little about this last night, and he thought he could see me in Portland, which he attributed to my being "laid back and liberal." He also said it was very green, which I have to say made me very happy.

I know very little else about the Pacific Northwest, so I must rely on you, gentle reader, to fill me in. What do you know, and how much will you share?

Most of my top cities were in the Northeast or on the East Coast. Go figure. ;)

Fuzzy and I spent a long weekend in Portland, just exploring the city, for our anniversary a few years ago. I quickly fell in love with the place. The people are nice, the attitude is much like the most relaxed parts of California, and it doesn't rain /all/ the time.

In March, we were walking around with sweaters and umbrellas. It got cold at night, but not horribly so.

There's a lot of theatre, some great bookstores (Powells, of course, is the most notorious - how can a store that fills a city block not be?), great food, and all the things one would expect in a cosmopolitan city - symphonies, museums, etc - all with a stunning view, easy access to rivers or ocean, and easy access to mountains as well.

The downtown is walking-friendly, and, in fact, in the main business triangle, public transportation is free. Home prices seemed cheap to me (being from Northern California, and all).

It's a city worth checking out, at any rate.

As someone who grew up in Redding...

You're from central California. ;)

Re: As someone who grew up in Redding...

If you divide the state into thirds, yes.
But if you only divide it in half, no.

Re: As someone who grew up in Redding...

I devide it this way:

Civilized = South
Booney Redneckland = North

:D

I did forget to mention that, didn't I? Meh, I can't imagine that it'll be any worse than my encounters with Medford's finest.
